Creating a Sense of Community for Creative Writers through Remote Learning

This fall, OpenEd is offering Creative Writing Certificate program courses through remote delivery using live videoconferencing.

While remote course delivery may be a new and different learning experience for many, OpenEd has the tools and technology to effectively provide students with a similar level of participation as its face-to-face courses. Students are still able to engage with other classmates, interact with their instructors, and continue to build a network with other writers while honing their writing skills.

“Each week, students will be learning live, in real time, which provides plenty of opportunity to engage with instructors and fellow writers through class and small group discussions,” says Shara Inotay, Creative Writing Certificate program manager. “Students will have the opportunity to provide and receive feedback on their writing pieces in the same format as our face-to-face courses. By using online discussion boards throughout the course, they will also be able to form connections and create a sense of community with each other.”

Wanting to find a community of writers is one of the many reasons recent graduate Jackie Woodcock enrolled in the program.

“The certificate program allowed me to make connections with people who shared my passion for writing,” says Woodcock. “My classmates have become fast friends, reliable readers and reviewers of my stories, and members of cherished writing groups.”

In some ways, remote course delivery provides a little more convenience and flexibility. Students will no longer need to travel to and from each class, find parking, or navigate the weather.

“Although we are unable to see people in person at the moment, we are happy to continue delivering courses with superior instructors, lots of workshopping, and a network of peers through our live weekly videoconferencing sessions,” says Inotay.

With guidance from experienced industry professionals, creative writing courses at U of G provide practical information on how to submit to publications, give and receive feedback, and navigate the world of writing.

Introduction to Creative Writing begins on Tuesday, September 29, and Writing Short Stories begins Thursday, October 8. Visit the Creative Writing Certificate program page for a full list of courses and program details.
