Offering financial assistance by covering tuition for one course, OpenEd helps students get one step closer to achieving their educational goals through two distinct bursaries: the Virginia L. Gray Memorial Bursary, established in 2010, and the Open Learning Bursary, established in 2001. Over the past seven years, OpenEd has provided learners with more than $35,000 in bursary awards.
“I chose to study with OpenEd because of the great food science program and the ability to learn part time and remotely,” says Emma Matchett, Open Learning Bursary recipient and current Open Learning program student. “I work for a small company in the food science field and the bursary allowed me to continue my educational journey. The courses have helped me advance my understanding of food science and improve my knowledge base for work.”
The OpenEd bursary program allows students to continue learning and working towards a successful future.
“When I was seven, I joined a summer horse riding camp and it was there that I fell in love with horses,” says Steven Smith, Virginia L. Gray Memorial Bursary recipient. “My learning disability didn’t stop me from enrolling in and completing the Equine Science Certificate in 2013, and I graduated with distinction. My education continues to help me every day, especially when I bought my first horse in 2015. I learned a lot of good information that I use daily with my horse.”
Funded by previous and current students as well as staff and faculty, the University community continues to donate annually to bursary funds. By encouraging others to pursue education with the help of a bursary, donors can support students in need. Donations can be made to a bursary of choice through course registration forms. As well, donors can simply contact OpenEd directly to make a donation.
There has never been a more important time to create educational pathways and learning opportunities to address the needs of diverse learners. OpenEd’s bursary program is an important contribution towards affordable education. By working together, financial barriers can be eliminated to improve access to the education, teaching, and research expertise at the University of Guelph.
