This fall, Dirk Steinke, a prominent DNA barcoding researcher, will again join OpenEd as instructor for the upcoming Introduction to DNA Barcoding course.
Steinke has gained a lot of media attention for his shark fin study. We briefly met with him to discuss his research and media exposure, as well as his perspective on teaching online DNA barcoding courses.
What is your primary research focus?
“My research program focuses on various themes at the intersection of evolution, ecology, and genomic science. There are a number of research topics I am currently pursuing, such as the use of DNA barcoding for conservation (e.g., the shark fin study), and the utilization of metabarcoding for biomonitoring.”
What unique facets do you bring to the online learning environment?
“Aside from the rather new and modern topic of DNA barcoding, including state of the art technology and analysis, I also bring an open mind to new forms of higher education in general.”
Who might be interested in the DNA barcoding courses?
“DNA barcoding impacts a number of fields, so participation ranges from undergraduate students to high school teachers, college instructors, corporate researchers and governmental scientists.”
How do you feel about all the media attention your research has garnered in the last year?
“I have had some involvement with media; however, the experience of being focused on as the central scientist was a new one for me. In the case of the shark fin study, I think it’s a good thing that it received wide attention. It's important for people to hear about what kind of cruel and unnecessary practice exists and how it affects such wonderful creatures.”
Steinke has had a significant impact on the DNA barcoding courses, both as instructor and course developer, and brings a contagious passion to the online learning environment.
Introduction to DNA Barcoding with Dirk Steinke begins Monday, September 23, 2024.
