Teaching Opportunity | Course Instructor – Equine Exercise Physiology

Equine Guelph and Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd) is recruiting an instructor for Equine Exercise Physiology with academic knowledge, passion for teaching, and equine experience to facilitate an online course in the Equine Studies Online program at the University of Guelph.

The Equine Studies Online certificate and diploma programs offer 19 online science, welfare, and business courses for the horse owner and enthusiast. Based in research and evidence-based practice, the course content draws on the expertise of Equine Guelph, the Ontario Veterinary College, and our equine industry partners.

Position Description

We are looking for an instructor to facilitate our Equine Exercise Physiology course in the Summer 2024 semester beginning May 13, 2024 and ending August 4, 2024.

Course topics include:

  • Movement and Muscle
  • Energy Provision and Production
  • The Respiratory and Cardiorespiratory Systems
  • Electrolytes and Thermoregulation
  • Fatigue
  • Training Adaptations
  • Monitoring the Changes
  • Emerging Topics and Trends

We provide our students with an engaging, relevant learning experience where they can immediately apply the concepts learned in the course. As an instructor with the Equine Studies Online program, you are required to facilitate the instruction and learning of the current course using the tools available in the course website: encouraging discussion, asking questions, providing support material, and interacting with students to deliver an engaging learning experience.

Course Format

Equine Studies Online courses are non-degree credit courses. All courses are 12 weeks in length, delivered completely online through the University of Guelph’s online learning management system (D2L), and follow the semester timeline with courses beginning in September, January, and May. The courses are fully facilitated by an instructor and all students begin and end the course together.

Instructor Responsibilities

  • Guiding students, with a welfare-based focus, to develop their own training programs or research papers that support health and wellness of the equine athlete through an evidence-based approach to training and monitoring
  • Encouraging student learning by creating a supportive online community
  • Establishing a presence in the online classroom and communicating effectively with students
  • Sharing real world experiences and providing examples that demonstrate your expertise of the topic area and meet the needs of the learners currently taking the course
  • Providing feedback to students by engaging in online discussions and answering questions
  • Working from the existing course, completing a review, and providing revisions for the course outline, materials list, and course website
  • Grading all assignments and quizzes following the rubric/grading criteria in the course outline and providing appropriate feedback on submitted work

Qualifications

You have:

  • A master's degree or PhD from an accredited institution with expertise in the subject area of equine physiology, including the course topics outlined
  • Remained current in your field and are knowledgeable of current resources and research in equine exercise physiology
  • Exceptional written communication skills—you can communicate effectively with students and are competent at using various communication tools
  • Teaching experience in an online environment—you show a dedication to teaching and learning and you are committed to quality teaching
  • Participated in an online course as a student—you have first-hand experience as a student in an online class
  • A level of confidence with computer technology, and the ability to master a learning management system—you can and desire to learn the software required to be a successful online facilitator
  • A commitment to meeting timelines—you can balance the competing priorities for your time and ensure they do not interfere with delivering the course
  • Access to the internet and computer technology to participate in the course, including access to audio and video equipment and software—you have the equipment to successfully participate in and facilitate an online course
  • Experience in many sectors of the competition disciplines (an asset)
