Online Course Development Opportunity | Course Developer – Statistics for Data Science

Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd) at the University of Guelph is recruiting a course developer who can support the development of a new course, Statistics for Data Science in the Data Science Certificate program. The new course development will align with current practices in the field and program learning outcomes. We are seeking candidates with expertise and industry experience in data science and statistics and a demonstrated commitment to teaching, online learning, and student success.

Program Information

The Data Science Certificate program is a professional development opportunity that provides an in-depth understanding of data's critical role in contemporary decision-making and equips students with the knowledge and expertise to meet the growing demand for data professionals and drive progress in the field. The Certificate is a non-degree program designed for professionals seeking to meet the growing demand for expertise in data science within the business landscape and who wish to gain a comprehensive understanding of the technical concepts and challenges associated with Big Data. It is comprised of four 11-week courses offered annually and delivered entirely online through the University of Guelph’s learning management system (Brightspace by D2L).

The Statistics in Data Science course will provide students with the statistical background needed for the Data Science Certificate. This includes the fundamental principles of probability and descriptive statistics and mastering techniques to analyze, interpret, and draw conclusions from data. The course will involve a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on practical exercises so that students can gain proficiency in applying statistical methods to real-world scenarios.

To maintain the overall program structure, the course developer will work within a set of parameters in continuous consultation with the Distance Education team.

Responsibilities

We are looking for subject matter experts who can work with the Manager, Program Development and the Distance Education Team to develop the Statistics in Data Science course to reflect current practices within the data science industry.

The course developer will:

  • Participate in planning meetings as well as regular update meetings with the instructional design team throughout the project
  • Create a revised course framework, unit prototype, assessments, and course content
  • Develop written course content with rich and relevant real-life examples and practice case studies
  • Design learning activities and visuals that reinforce key concepts and skills to support effective knowledge sharing
  • Develop, select and/or create appropriate course resources (articles, images, video, etc.) for the course
  • Create or select resources considering copyright, accessibility and quality assurance requirements and standards
  • Develop assessments and grading rubrics to align with course learning outcomes
  • Participate in a quality review and revision of the course within the learning management system before launch
  • Review and respond to feedback from the development team

Qualifications

  • A graduate degree from an accredited institution and expertise in data science and statistics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least five years of industry experience in data science or a related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge, professional experience and/or training in the application of statistics including statistical concepts (probability, random variables, distributions, independence), data visualization (graphical summaries), descriptive statistics, central tendency, variability, correlation, normal distribution, inference, estimation, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests.
  • An ability to engage with academic and grey literature in the field to identify suitable resources to inform course content
  • Experience with curriculum development—including course content, resources and assessments
  • Experience developing materials for learning management systems to facilitate an online learning experience
  • Previous adult or post-secondary level teaching experience is an asset
  • Excellent experience balancing competing priorities for your time and appropriately managing your time to meet deadlines
  • An ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of an academic team
  • Exceptional communication, especially in the realm of writing, and an ability to articulate complex ideas, concepts and processes clearly and concisely in writing
  • Excellent organizational, presentation, and communication skills
  • A high level of confidence in using Microsoft Office Suite to develop high-quality content
  • Access to the internet and computer technology to participate in the course development, including access to audio and video equipment and software. You have the equipment to participate in the process.

Compensation for this contract is $6,500-7,000.
