Teaching Opportunity | Course Instructor – Human Resources Planning

Open Learning and Educational Support (OpenEd), University of Guelph, is recruiting an instructor with a passion for teaching and the academic knowledge and experience to facilitate the online synchronous course Human Resources Planning, one of nine courses offered in the Diploma in Human Resources Management.

Position Description

We are seeking an instructor to develop and facilitate the Human Resources Planning course during Winter 2025. The course is typically scheduled to run Thursdays, with the first class on Thursday, January 9, 2025. It is eleven (11) weeks in length and is delivered live via Zoom each week from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The course also utilizes an online learning program to support course materials, communications, etc. All students begin and end the course together.

As an OpenEd instructor, you support student learning, develop course content—including resources, activities, and assessments—grade, and provide meaningful student feedback in alignment with provided learning outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a course structure including all curricular and assessment elements
  • Prepare a course outline and assessment structure with rubrics as per the standards and requirements of the department
  • Develop and update learning activities including quizzes, exercises, case studies, and discussion activities that reinforce learning, in consultation with OpenEd staff
  • Work collaboratively with OpenEd staff according to established timelines and respond to OpenEd staff in a timely manner (24-48 hours) to support course administration
  • Select, prepare and identify course content, including but not limited to: reading lists, materials list, slides, visuals, activities in alignment with course learning outcomes
  • Facilitate the course online based on a set schedule
  • Create a supportive and engaging online community that fosters student learning
  • Share real-world experiences and provide examples that demonstrate your expertise in the topic area and meet the needs of the learners
  • Utilize the online learning management system as part of course facilitation
  • Respond to and support students in a timely manner (24-48 hours)
  • Participate in meetings, orientations, and trainings as requested to support course administration and instructor orientation
  • Grade all assessments following the rubric/grading criteria and provide appropriate feedback on submitted work
  • Provide student feedback in a timely manner throughout the semester with final grades being completed within two (2) weeks of the course end date
  • Re-read or re-grade assessments, attend appeals, and participate in cases of academic misconduct, which may occur after the end date of the course, as required
  • Manage files and comply with University of Guelph Policies and Procedures to maintain a safe, engaging, and supportive learning and working environment

Course Description

This course introduces the strategic planning role that Human Resources Professionals contribute to organizations with an emphasis on Human Resources Planning (HRP). Students will examine the challenges and demands of organizational and technological change, corporate positioning, cost containment, benchmarking, productivity improvements, forecasting, and other considerations of Human Resources Management. An understanding of the fundamentals and essential elements of HRP process in organizations will be provided. Students will acquire knowledge about analysis, assessment, and programming related to Human Resources in organizational development, business, and strategic planning. The theory about quantitative methods as well as qualitative concepts, approaches and techniques will be explored.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify the economy and legislation that affect the direction of human resources planning strategies that require appropriate and outcome-oriented human resources management practices and policies
  • Apply a strategic human resources plan, and make decisions about the allocation of resources for the effective management of people in organizations
  • Identify and understand the role of a human resources professional as a business partner in organizational and functional strategy formulation and implementation

Qualifications

  • A university degree from an accredited institution with expertise in the subject area; HRPA designation is considered an asset; CCAP Designation is required.
  • A minimum of five years’ work experience in human resources including human resources planning, strategic management, performance management and HR information systems in a diverse range of organizations and contexts
  • Exceptional written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with students in class and online
  • Experience in developing course curriculum, training or facilitating
  • Teaching experience in an online synchronous learning environment—you show a dedication to teaching and learning, and are committed to quality teaching, delivering courses, and student support
  • Excellent ability to manage projects and due dates, and meet timelines
  • Excellent ability to balance competing priorities
  • Strong computer technology skills and the ability to learn new software and computer systems
  • Excellent management skills in Zoom, email, PowerPoint, and Word; previous experience utilizing D2L Brightspace or other learning management software is an asset.
  • Access to the internet and computer technology to participate in live synchronous delivery and the course online learning management system
