A Note from our Executive Director


It’s hard to believe another year has already passed. Together we have grown tremendously and I’m proud of the progress we’ve made in leveraging new technologies, reaching new lifelong learners, and growth in our programming.

As always, I am thrilled to present to you our annual report, which looks a little different this year. We’ve opted for a simplified approach to outlining our highlights and achievements—one that truly showcases our creativity and impact. This visual representation illustrates our best work over the past year.

OpenEd is a labour of love and we continue to be resilient leaders in the face of a forever changing landscape of education and technology. I am humbled by the energy and expertise that continues to persevere in this extraordinary department. The people are passionate, the work is authentic, and the results demonstrate our commitment to improving life.

Department Overview


OpenEd is comprised of multiple units that work together to create educational pathways and opportunities for a wide variety of learners, and provide expertise and support to the University community as a whole.

Continuing Education (CE) offers non-degree courses and programs in a variety of delivery formats.

Classroom Technical Support (CTS) provides a wide range of AV and classroom conferencing services and support.

Distance Education (DE) develops and delivers online degree-credit courses.

English Language Programs (ELP) provides educational pathways for English language learners.

Teaching & Learning Technologies (TLT) administers and supports CourseLink and provides learning technology training and support.

  • 64 new DE courses and modules developed, 6 DE courses redeveloped, and 526 unique DE courses and modules maintained
  • Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE) Design and Marketing Awards: Best in Show in Design Award Stream
  • 4,100+ courses delivered through CourseLink
  • $1.5M of classroom upgrades across campus administered
  • $7,000+ bursary funds awarded to 11 non-degree program students
  • First place design award won for Dear PSW campaign in the 2023 Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE) Design and Marketing Awards competition
  • 280+ participants for the first on-campus Accessibility Conference since 2019
  • 60+ Instructor Training Sessions offered to address return to campus and synchronous online learning
  • 7,000+ non-degree enrolments and conference attendees for online and remote programming
  • 30+ virtual recruitment activities for English Language Programs
  • First ever digital badges awarded for 5 PSW micro-credential courses using MyCredsTM credential wallet
  • 18 employers reached through ongoing partnership with D2L Wave
  • Significant research project successfully overseen: 'Closing the Skills Gap: The Value of Micro-Credentials to Canadian Employers Research Project'
  • New Certificate in Advanced Interpersonal Skills for PSW Practice program launched
  • 10% increase in CE course and conference offerings
  • $360K received through Ontario Micro-Credentials Community Impact Award to fund the development of 8 new PSW Strategies micro-credentials
  • $9,198 raised for United Way Campaign
  • 55+ AV, microphone, monitor and/or projector replacements across campus classrooms
  • 320 courses and 115,370 submissions of Turnitin Gradescope platform in the first year of implementation
  • 30+ active agents in 50+ regions and countries representing English Language Programs
  • New Teaching & Learning Technologies micro-website redesigned
