Remote Teaching Workshop Series

This workshop series will guide you, hands on, through several areas that users have identified as relevant to teaching remotely in Fall 2020. To provide you with support during the workshop, enrollment of each workshop has been capped at 20 participants. Any registrations over the cap will be placed on a waitlist and additional workshops will be scheduled, if required, to meet instructor need. The instructional portions of the workshop will also be recorded and made available upon completion of the event. New workshop topics and dates will be added over the upcoming weeks; please check back regularly for updates.

Creating Simple Asynchronous Lectures

Description: In this workshop, you will be guided through some of the simplest options for creating asynchronous lectures and content, including off-camera methods. This workshop will walk you through preparing for your recording, options for capturing your content, and options for hosting your recording.

Creating a Video with Embedded Quizzing

Date & Time: Thursday, July 16, 2020, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.

Description: Users planning to host content using on Microsoft Stream will be able to make use of the embedded surveys and quizzes within those videos. This workshop will introduce you to Microsoft Forms, where these surveys and quizzes are created. We will also cover the why and how of embedding them into your videos. Lastly, we will take a look at how to manage the results of these forms and how you can import them into CourseLink.

Virtual Classroom

Description: Virtual Classroom is one of the main web conferencing options for content delivery on campus and this workshop will walk you through the process of creating and hosting a meeting. Starting with a general orientation of the platform, we will highlight the key feature to host a lecture in either a synchronous or asynchronous format.

Zoom for Synchronous Lectures

Description: Zoom is a popular web conferencing platform for the delivery of synchronous content including lectures, seminars, and office hours. In this workshop, you will learn more about the tools available within Zoom to promote student engagement and have the opportunity to try them out in a small group setting.

CourseLink Groups Tool

Description: With the movement to remote delivery for Fall 2020, many faculty and instructors are looking for ways to facilitate student interaction and collaboration. CourseLink's Groups tool allows instructors to create groups based on different criteria. In this workshop, you will learn about the group formation process and the CourseLink tools that can be linked with groups.

PEAR (Peer Assessment Evaluation & Review)

Description: The benefits of peer review are often overlooked due to the time, organization, resources and staff needed to make the process a smooth and successful one, especially for larger class sizes. In this workshop, we will review how PEAR, an online peer review application, can overcome many of these issues by simplifying and automating much of the administration of such a project.

Lena Paulo Kushnir 

Lena Paulo Kushnir.Lena Paulo Kushnir, PhD, is the Associate Director, Educational Technologies in OpenEd. She has expertise in the field of teaching and learning technologies, pedagogy and SoTL research. She has extensive experience both teaching and supporting face-to-face, blended, hybrid, flipped, and fully-online courses. Visit Lena's LinkedIn profile to see some of her past work.

Carolyn Creighton 
Carolyn Creighton.Carolyn Creighton, PhD, is an instructional technology specialist with OpenEd. In her role, Carolyn uses pedagogical best practices to assist faculty and staff in integrating various technologies into their courses. She has experience working with CourseLink and student response systems. 
Rich Couto 
Rich Couto.As an instructional technology specialist, Rich Couto, B.Sc., provides expertise and leadership in the application of instructional technology theory and well-grounded pedagogical approaches to course websites and in-class instruction. Through researching, piloting and assessing emerging educational technologies, he is able to propose innovative solutions to complex issues using a sound pedagogical approach.
